It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that Chelsea Public Schools shares the unexpected passing of longtime educator, coach, mentor, and Green Dragon icon, Coach Frank Captain.
Coach Captain dedicated the overwhelming majority of his life and career to Chelsea Public Schools. Beginning in the fall of 1985, he served generations of students and athletes with unmatched passion, loyalty, and heart. Aside from a few years spent serving at Quinton, Bartlesville, and Cleveland, Chelsea was his home and his life’s work.
Over the course of his career, Coach Captain served as an elementary PE teacher, assistant football coach, head football coach, head girls track coach, and ultimately built our boys and girls cross country programs as their head coach. In the classroom, he impacted students first through elementary physical education and later as a respected high school U.S. History and AP U.S. History teacher.
But Coach Captain’s legacy reaches far beyond titles, classrooms, or wins and losses.
He poured himself into people. He believed in students when they struggled to believe in themselves. He had a rare ability to motivate, encourage, challenge, and inspire others to become more than they thought possible. His influence shaped not only athletes and students, but families, colleagues, and an entire community.
The Captain family holds a special place in the heart of Chelsea Public Schools and the Chelsea community. His wife, Madalyn, faithfully served our district for 26 years as an elementary teacher and reading specialist. Together, their family has left an immeasurable mark on generations of Green Dragons.
As a district and community, we are grieving together. Many of us simply do not know Chelsea Schools without Frank Captain. For me personally, Coach Captain was my first grade PE teacher and my first football coach. He is one of the reasons I became an educator. Like so many others, I can honestly say this school will never feel quite the same without him.
During this difficult time, we ask our community to continue lifting the Captain family in prayer. We pray for grace, understanding, comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead. We also pray that we honor Coach Captain’s legacy by continuing to invest in students and each other in a way that reflects the heart of what it truly means to be a Green Dragon.
Funeral services for Coach Captain will be held on Thursday, May 21 at 11:00 AM in the Dale Wilson Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Chelsea High School.
Coach Captain’s impact on this school and community cannot be fully measured, and his legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives he changed over the last four decades.

Chelsea JOM students recently traveled to the Cherokee Nation capital to compete in the annual Cherokee Language Bowl — representing our district with pride and determination.
With only two years in the program and 20 students participating, our middle school and elementary teams stepped into strong competition and held their own against schools from across Green Country.
While we didn’t bring home a trophy this year, our students gained something even more valuable — confidence, experience, and a deeper connection to Cherokee language and culture.
We are incredibly proud of their effort and grateful to our sponsors and mentors who make this opportunity possible.

Championship Saturday for the 2026 John Michael Humler Memorial Basketball Tournament! Chelsea Girls at 1:00, Chelsea Boys at 2:30! Live auction between our Girls & Boys game for pies, parking spaces, family passes, 1/2 hog from Lyle's Meat Processing, and one general spray from Mullis Pest Control & other great items. There is also a silent auction that lasts until about 9:00! Concessions are great and the atmosphere is even better! Come support your Green Dragons and watch some great basketball! It is with heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of our varsity football game with Adair on Friday, October 3, 2025. Tragedy has struck close to the Green Dragon Family and in honor and support of our players and their families we believe this in the best interest of all involved. We appreciate the support, cooperation, and prayers from the Adair Warriors. Now is the time for the Green Dragon Community to rally around our students and their families. We ask that you join us in prayerful support during this time of regrettable tragedy.
Important Bus Route Updates for the New School Year
As we prepare for the new school year, we want to thank you for your continued support in helping us provide safe and reliable transportation for our students. We are making a few adjustments to our bus routes to better serve our families and community.
Here are the updates:
Bus 2 - no changes
Bus 3 – This will now be a town route. It will include Harbor Church, Olive Street (from 10th Street south), all town stops east of Highway 66, and will continue to serve Shady Lane. The country portion of Bus 3 will now be served by Buses 6 and 7.
Bus 4 – Will now serve Secondine. There are no changes to pick-up times.
Bus 5 - no changes
Bus 6 – Will continue to serve Bushyhead and will add the country portion south of Highway 66 that was previously on Bus 3.
Bus 7 – Will continue to serve the Bowlin's Springs and Catale areas and will add the country portion on N/S 4310 that was previously on Bus 3.
📌 Important Note for New Riders on Buses 6 & 7:
Please call the Transportation Director at the High School to receive your new pick-up and drop-off times.
We kindly ask for your patience and understanding as these new routes are put into place. Adjustments to times may be necessary during the first days of school as drivers become familiar with the changes.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your student’s school site or contact the Transportation Director. Together, we can make sure every student starts and ends their school day safely.
