Students from Chelsea Public Schools recently traveled to the capital of the Cherokee Nation to put their language skills and cultural knowledge to the test at the annual Cherokee Language Bowl. Competing against roughly 25 teams from across “Green Country” each day, Chelsea students represented our district with pride and showed that a commitment to heritage and learning is thriving in our halls.
This marks only the second year Chelsea JOM has offered the Cherokee Quiz Bowl program, and what began as a new initiative has quickly grown into a meaningful opportunity for students. Currently, 20 students attend regular sessions as they work to master the complexities of Cherokee language and history.
Competition Dates
Wednesday, February 25, 2026: Chelsea Middle School students competed with a quick, steady effort.
Thursday, February 26, 2026: Art Goad Elementary students stepped up and delivered a strong performance.
For many students, the event was a step into unknown territory. Despite the pressure of competition and a deep field of teams, Chelsea students exceeded expectations and gained valuable experience that will help fuel continued growth.
“Our students really surprised themselves with just how much knowledge they have gained in such a short time. It was an incredible experience to see them hold their own in such a difficult area. While we didn’t walk away with a win this year, the knowledge we gained will fuel the drive for next year.”
Chelsea’s success is credited in large part to the mentorship of Language Coach Hellen Henry, whose guidance has helped students move beyond memorization to a deeper understanding of the Cherokee language—keeping the culture vibrant and accessible for the next generation.
A special thank you to Mr. Travis Battles and Mrs. Pam Phillips for taking on this project and supporting students through this meaningful work. Chelsea JOM is doing outstanding things for our students and community.
