Long before the first bell rings, the work has already begun.
Across Chelsea Public Schools, students are spending their summer evenings preparing for the opportunities ahead. Whether on the field, on the practice grounds, or developing new skills, they are choosing discipline, teamwork, and growth long before anyone is keeping score.
The first day of school doesn't create excellence, it simply reveals the work that has already taken place.
Different passions. Different paths. One shared commitment: becoming better than yesterday.
In the Land of Dragons, excellence isn't found... it is forged.
💚 22 days until we welcome our Dragons back on August 19.
RETURN OF THE DRAGONS
Chapter 1 | Page 2 — First Signs of Life
Before students fill our classrooms, before teachers welcome a new class, and before the first bell rings, there are countless quiet moments of preparation.
Across Chelsea Public Schools, dedicated staff members are already hard at work preparing classrooms, maintaining our campuses, and making sure everything is ready for the first day of school.
Every great school year begins long before August 19.
The story continues...
🐉 28 Days Until the First Day of School
#ReturnOfTheDragons #ChelseaPublicSchools #LandOfDragons #BackToSchool

In just one month, our classrooms will once again be filled with learning, our hallways with laughter, and our campus with the energy that only our students can bring.
Over the next 30 days, we'll be counting down to the first day of school by celebrating the people, places, traditions, and moments that make Chelsea Public Schools special. Each page is another step closer to welcoming our Dragons home.
Whether you're a student, parent, staff member, alumnus, or community member, we invite you to join us as we begin a new chapter together.
30 days until the first day of school.
📅 First Day of School: August 19, 2026

Our first bell rings at 8:00 AM, and the tardy bell rings at 8:05 AM.
The time between 8:00 and 8:20 AM is a crucial window for our classrooms. It’s when students participate in Morning Meetings and build vital connections with their peers.
Arriving just a few minutes late means teachers have to stop their routines to get the student settled, check folders, and take lunch counts, which impacts the whole class. Thank you for making an on-time arrival a priority!

Between now and the first day of school, we’ll be sharing quick, fun insights to give you a glimpse into your child's daily routine, along with helpful highlights from the student handbook. Today's "Did You Know?" focuses on RTI.
What is RTI? (Response to Intervention)
Our RTI block is a dedicated daily period during which students move into small, targeted learning groups. Students are placed in these groups based on benchmark scores and progress monitoring data to ensure they receive the appropriate support or enrichment.
Our RTI focus is on building strong phonics and vocabulary skills. This year, our time will be from 8:20–8:50.
Our Weekly Schedule:
Monday – Thursday: Targeted small-group learning.
Friday: "Drop Everything and Read" (D.E.A.R.) – a dedicated time focused on building independent reading stamina.

Coach Captain dedicated the overwhelming majority of his life and career to Chelsea Public Schools. Beginning in the fall of 1985, he served generations of students and athletes with unmatched passion, loyalty, and heart. Aside from a few years spent serving at Quinton, Bartlesville, and Cleveland, Chelsea was his home and his life’s work.
Over the course of his career, Coach Captain served as an elementary PE teacher, assistant football coach, head football coach, head girls track coach, and ultimately built our boys and girls cross country programs as their head coach. In the classroom, he impacted students first through elementary physical education and later as a respected high school U.S. History and AP U.S. History teacher.
But Coach Captain’s legacy reaches far beyond titles, classrooms, or wins and losses.
He poured himself into people. He believed in students when they struggled to believe in themselves. He had a rare ability to motivate, encourage, challenge, and inspire others to become more than they thought possible. His influence shaped not only athletes and students, but families, colleagues, and an entire community.
The Captain family holds a special place in the heart of Chelsea Public Schools and the Chelsea community. His wife, Madalyn, faithfully served our district for 26 years as an elementary teacher and reading specialist. Together, their family has left an immeasurable mark on generations of Green Dragons.
As a district and community, we are grieving together. Many of us simply do not know Chelsea Schools without Frank Captain. For me personally, Coach Captain was my first grade PE teacher and my first football coach. He is one of the reasons I became an educator. Like so many others, I can honestly say this school will never feel quite the same without him.
During this difficult time, we ask our community to continue lifting the Captain family in prayer. We pray for grace, understanding, comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead. We also pray that we honor Coach Captain’s legacy by continuing to invest in students and each other in a way that reflects the heart of what it truly means to be a Green Dragon.
Funeral services for Coach Captain will be held on Thursday, May 21 at 11:00 AM in the Dale Wilson Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Chelsea High School.
Coach Captain’s impact on this school and community cannot be fully measured, and his legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives he changed over the last four decades.
